Family News

Thanks to Jaylyne and Craig for the many pictures from the 2014 Family Reunion at Downata!

Mom has a doctor's appointment the end of September to see whether or not hip surgery will be helpful and is viable.

Lorinda and Jay:  Lorinda is coming to Utah to see the grandchildren--would love to see some Cooks!  The number of our grandchildren is growing (Shaun & Lanette and Rachel & Brian)! Lorinda's part-time job has gone to full time because an employee was let go--hopefully this is temporary!   Oregon is getting crazier!  A bill was recently passed allowing children 15 and older to decide if they want a sex-change operation--the State will pay and parents don't have a say!

          Shaun and Lanette are adjusting to a new addition--it's a little tougher when you don't have 8 months to prepare other siblings !

          David likes his work for the State of Utah and life in Bountiful.

          Rachel and Brian are expecting a son in February--and are very excited!

          Karina is teaching Math at Centennial Middle School in Provo--and is really enjoying it (although she doesn't much like the politics).

          Jacob is laying floors during the day--and had been working in a restaurant at night.  He plans to return to Logan in November and attend Utah State in January.

          Jeremy's mission was divided, and he is now serving in the Portugal Porto Mission.

          Sam is a junior in high school--       

Lyndon and Debbie:  We have had an interesting summer. Lyndon had girls rough camp which he enjoys each summer and this summer was no exception. He loved it! Then in July we planned a two day camping trip for the 4th. Well, that got cancelled because I fell and broke my right wrist. It took July and most of August to heal, but it is doing much better now.  

          In August we welcomed baby number five for Ashley and Jed. They had a 9 lb. 3 ou. bouncing baby boy. He has lots of dark hair and of course he is darling.  They named him Robert Lyndon Romig. They are blessing him tomorrow, the 13th of September.  

          Todd and Megan are also expecting another baby the end of January. They are having a boy!  We are excited for them. That will give us 10 grandchildren at the end of January. We feel so blessed. 

          Today, September 12th, Delphia and Chloe were baptized together at Erin's stake building. It was wonderful and they both looked so beautiful in their white dresses. It has been a wonderful day for us.
          On September 21st. we are going to Florida to Disney World and Universal Studios for two weeks with Shane and Erin and their girls. We are looking forward to it. We are also going to spend a day in the Florida Temple doing family names that we have researched. Life is good and we are  tremendously blessed. We love you all and hope everyone has a wonderful fall season.

Danna and Don: Danna went to Las Vegas for additional training with her body code work. Jonathon has started his last year at Utah State (then comes the Masters)!  Rachelle is in her 2nd year at Utah State.

          Hyrum earned his Arrow of Light in Cub Scouts--Congratulations!

Karleen and Ken:  Ken celebrated his 75th birthday--so we had a party--he didn't even know it!  He assumed everyone was at the house because the next day was the Memorial Service for his Mom.  Also buried his mother-in-law in September, so we flew to California--and were able to have dinner with Amber. Karleen taught institute this summer--provident living--Amber and Courtney were adamant about the importance of having cookies after each lesson--sheesh!

          Courtney, James and boys are doing well in North Salt Lake--came home from the Library one morning to a fire in one of the apartments in their complex--the boys were given fire hats--no damage.

          Aaron is making progress on his car--at least he works on it on his days off--and it isn't in our basement any longer!

Randy and Joanne: 

 Joanne had shoulder surgery on the 22 of September. Fortunately there was no tear and only a rotator cuff impingement, which means healing will be MUCH faster. She is hoping to do some fun projects for the upcoming holidays. 

We are having our backyard redone. Randy and Matt have taken on one section and we have hired someone else to move the mountain and boulders around on a different section. It will be a vast improvement and we are excited for a more accessible and terraced backyard. 

Laura is loving her works.  She has three jobs that keep her busy and happy.  She is teaching seminary part time with the hope that it will become full time no later than next school year. She, with another investor, started a treatment home for four male youth.  She also has her own LLC where she teaches horse riding lessons and does equine therapy.  She is the advisor for the Mia Maids and teaches most of those girls how to ride horses.  Other than that, she likes to sleep.  

                             

Jaylyne and Craig:   Craig and I have spent much of the summer in our yard,  The work seems to never be done out there.  We have huge piles of rocks on the east of our house from the garden and raspberry patch and the window wells.  

                            

          Sarah's surgery went well.  She swallows some radioactive stuff on Friday which will target anything left in, so that after recovering from swallowing the stuff, she can move on with looking for work, etc.  I suppose there may still be a period of time where they are trying to get the right dose of thyroid medication.  We will see.

          Kirsten has been called to be the Webelos Leader and Hugo was just called as the Scoutmaster.  They have both had Woodbadge Training, so they are quite excited.  But Kirsten is taking another class at Wayne State as she looks toward graduate school, so she will still be busy.  

         Hugo, Hannah, Leila and Hugo rode the DALMAC again.  They averaged about 60 miles per day and rode from East Lansing to Mackinaw City.  The kids groaned a lot, but behind the groans they had a good time.

         Hugo is hiking Isle Royale right now with some friends from a previous ward.  This is the least visited National Park in the upper peninsula of Michigan - very rugged!  Kirsten is trying to survive the first month of school (curriculum nights, back-to-school socials, seminary, figuring out schedules, logistics, lunch routines, homework routines), while taking the second semester of organic chemistry with the lab.  CRAZY!!!

The kids are having fun and are busy with soccer, cross country, music, and friends.  We now have a 16 year old with a learners permit, but our lives are so crazy that I don't know how we will get her 30 hours of supervised driving in!

         Catherine and Elizabeth experienced firsthand a fire alarm during a school assembly which was the result of a fire in the staff lounge.  Fire drills under the usual circumstances may not be enough because, from their account, many students panicked and pushed and screamed.  

          Ben has been diligently studying to learn AutoCad and is working closely with job coaches to get an internship.  Julie is teaching at a private Montessori school.  So life is very busy for them.  

          Daniel has recovered from an emergency appendectomy.  Eric is in a mixed English/Spanish first grade class.  Marc and Zac are both doing well.  Crystal has become a consultant for a company which offers freeze-dried products.

          Jordan is working full-time at Home Depot. He officially graduated from ISU in August in Chemistry.  They are looking forward to another son before the end of the year.  Hannah and Chester are home-schooled, using the Idaho Distance Learning Academy.  It was a very good experience for Hannah last year.

          Elise is working at the Church History Library in Salt Lake.  She lives close by and loves being able to walk to work.  One thing she does not enjoy about her job is sitting at the computer for most of the day.  She would like to be more active.  However, she has been busy doing the exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversary of James Talmage completing Jesus the Christ and did an interview about the exhibit with the LDS newsroom.  She also has helped Fred Wood, a BYU professor with his research on Icelandic Saints.  

(Karleen: I read the article in the LDS newsroom as well as Elise's write-up about the project--wow! I will be sure to point it out to people here in my Ward (and do some bragging, of course!)

Darryl & Mary:  The Darryl Cook Family Reunion was a fun success! We spent some time in Pocatello and in Driggs. Heidi spearheaded tie-dying T-shirts. Dad and Zac arranged for a fun day at Palisades Reservoir. We also had fun playing at the park, swimming at Ross Park, and learning some genealogy.
               
          John and Kandace and family had a fun trip this summer to Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Palmyra, Kirtland, Nauvoo, and Trenton, Missouri (home of John's sister Emily Lasley) We enjoyed visiting John's family in DC as well as the Washington Monument, US Capital Building, and the Keenan kid's favorite, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. We were able to watch the two Pageants in Nauvoo and would highly recommend both! As a family, we had a great time but we also decided 17 days away from home was a little too long. We were ready to go home at the end.
          Right now we are in the midst of soccer season. Johnny is playing on the Shelley High School team. Isaac is playing on a Junior High Club team. We spend most nights huddled in blankets on the side of a soccer field. Luckily, the girls always find someone to play with so they enjoy it too. Life is busy, but good.

        Morgan started preschool this year. Ivie is in 8th grade and decided to play the violin in orchestra. Heidi is teaching Physics for her first time. Justin has been working on some creative projects (i.e. children book, homemade go cart and a unique Halloween costume for Morgan...watch Facebook for pictures in October).

          Emilee and Vinson and family are settling in at our new home:

          The boys are busy (and keep me busy:) ) with 3 in soccer, 2 in cross country (two different schools), and 2 in piano. This fall Seth started kindergarten, and Caleb got to start middle school together. 
          We love visitors and have a basement available for anyone who wants to vacation in the Seattle area:)!

        Zac and Jenny are completing the paperwork and planning to adopt. They also have a trip for just the two of them to go to Orlando the first of October!  And for those of you who haven't heard he is working at Utah State--no more commute across that Utah plain! Owen is riding his bike.

Shirleen Hendrix Noble's granddaughter spent her summer here in Ketchikan!  Jessie is Valerie's daughter.  Some of you may remember her from the 2010 Family Reunion--she remembers some of you!  Her brother Nathan returns from his mission to Winnipeg in a few weeks (his mission president is from our Ward in Ketchikan!--small world).  Jessie is planning to put in her mission papers when she returns home to Palmer, Alaska.  Shirleen had surgery in May--and is finally recovering nicely!

Rumor has it that Pam has retired!  YEAH! 

For those of you who remember Carol Christiansen--they are living in Boise--she also is retiring at the end of the year--and is excited about the prospect of attending the temple more regularly.
