THANKS to Darryl for the super family reunion this summer!  The overnighters had a great time, as did the Saturday arrivals!  Justin, Robert, Emily & Families came great distances--it was so good to see and visit with everyone!!

DANNA AND DON:

Jared and Jen are settled in their new home in Hallsville, TX.   The children are enjoying having a dog, chickens, ducks and 2 calves.

Don and Danna went to TX over labor day weekend.  We went to a Civil War prisoner of war camp and the zoo in Tyler and enjoyed spending time with family.

Eldon and Courtney went to Iowa and Kansas City, KS in August.  Courtneys' parents moved back to Iowa earlier this year.  They enjoyed their trip.

Jordan and Sonya will be staying in Japan another 2 years while Jordan does ship duty.  Danna is excited to be able to go to Japan in November when their baby comes.

Jonathon is glad to be done with school and working.  Whitney is still in school but excited to not have to work as much.

Rachelle and Brantzen are living in Cedar City; both working and going to school this semester.  They keep busy and happy.

LORINDA AND JAY:

Lorinda and Jay appreciated Jacob's visit in August. He and Jeremy removed a wood stove, the brick surrounding it, replaced the wall and textured it, replaced 1000 square feet of flooring and replaced doors and knobs. Lorinda spent the next two weeks painting and cleaning. Now their house is for sale and as soon as a firm buyer appears, they are planning to move to Cedar City.

Back to school story.... Iris began first grade and one day Lanette went to pick her up from school and she couldn't be found. They searched The Whole building and was about to call the police when Iris' kindergarten teacher came to the office. She remembered Iris telling her that she always talked about wanting to ride the bus. Sure enough, that day she jumped on the bus and got off with a random boy and his mother who called the school to let them know.

Lanette added:  We spent a good chunk of our summer on the road as part of our family goal to visit something in all 50 states before Iris graduates high school. We enjoyed checking off seven states this year, and are excited to start planning next year’s adventure. The kids did better than we expected, especially with all of the camping! Iris, Mack, and Theo’s favorite sites were Mount Rushmore and the Redwoods.

Iris started first grade in a French immersion program. Half of the day she has an English teacher and the other half a French teacher. Her French teacher doesn’t speak English to the kids at all. It’s been a challenge, but she seems to enjoy it overall. 

LYNDON AND DEBBIE:

Ashley writes:  I feel like we are moving into a busier phase of life. Ruby and Emma are participating in Ballroom this year. They love it and are looking forward to competing (both are hoping they will qualify for the BYU competition) Ruby ran in the student elections. She didn't win, but I know she learned and grew from the experience. Eli loves school and giving me a report on what the other kids do that get them in trouble, he is famous for taking Jed's tools and stashing them away so he can "fix the trampoline and the house." We recently ordered him his own recycling can because he was stealing our neighbors and lining them up in front of our house. He will be happy when it is delivered on Tuesday. Jaxon fills our house with his loud singing, accompanied by his swiveling be hips and quick smile. Robbie is tenaciously two, he climbs on everything and loves to turn on the water in the bathroom and get wet, he likes to pray at meal time and make Henry cry. Henry is good at making me smile. He is such a prince. We are taking every opportunity to this the fall weather and like to be out walking in the evenings. I am pleased to report that my Christmas shopping is done, and we are looking forward to traveling to Cedar City to visit Jed's parents and attend the Cedar City Temple Open House.

KARLEEN AND KEN:

We're in Utah to welcome a new grandbaby! This week we're at Grandma Cookie's house!
Courtney adds: We're enjoying our days as official 'home owners' (let's not look at how much of the actual home we own with our mortgage) and are excited for Dad and Mom to come visit and help change out our water heater! Our oldest (Jesse) started kindergarten, and he and daddy enjoy riding bikes to school on Fridays. We're due to have a baby girl joining our family around October 21st and are excitedly getting ready for her arrival! I've picked up a few more piano students and have also developed some lesson plans to keep Jesse (and Brycen) busy when he's 'off track' from our year round school system. A couple weeks ago James and his brother replaced some boards on our deck and I painted it blue!

JAYLYNE AND CRAIG:

Craig and I served our last week as LDS Family Services Missionaries in the Addiction Recovery Program in mid-September.  We may still be called occasionally to substitute.  Craig has been serving two and a half days each week in the scanning center and really enjoys that.  I am glad that my birthday is past because the Medicare Phone calls have stopped.  I am certain I received over 100 from about May until mid-September.  So, those of you approaching 65, brace yourself!

I took two personal days and we met Kirsten and Hugo and their family at Henry's Lake State Park and spent that afternoon and the next day in Yellowstone with them.  We thoroughly enjoyed that.  They were here the day Andrea and her family brought Elizabeth up to Provo.  But Elise and Daniel and Crystal and their boys met Andrea's family in Provo.  So, Hannah and Elizabeth are settled in at school, and from a brief visit with them yesterday, are really enjoying it.  

(Someone else may share this, but they have two classes together and that was totally unplanned).  If our children don't respond, here are some things we know:

Ben and Julie have a new address:  264 Stuart   Chubbuck, ID  83202  Their ward has been terrific as there are other members who deal with autism.  Ben is taking a class toward an Associate's Degree in Auto Cad and has a job in that field in the afternoons.

Jordan and Janneece also have a new address:  73 Kopp Road, American Falls, ID  83211   They are in the same ward and are grateful for that because Jordan began serving a few months ago in the Elders' Quorum Presidency.  He still goes to Primary to help Janneece during the Sunday School time.  Their new home is larger than the trailer they had been in and they have their own yard and are delighted, in spite of the number of things that have had to be fixed after they moved in:  faucets, etc.  

Elise is serving as assistant secretary in the R. S. Presidency in her ward.  She still enjoys making bound hard-cover books (an amazing craft) and playing the keyboard in her spare time, the very little which she has.

Hugo and Hugo Von accompanied Hugo's father on a fishing trip to Alaska.  They are enjoying the salmon which they were able to ship home.  While they were gone, Leila enjoyed a trip to Columbia with Hugo's mother.  They were able to find family records in one of the churches they visited.  Between Scout Camp and Girls' Camp, Joshua's eighth birthday and baptism, and Hannah's summer jobs (nannying and working at Jimmy John's), their trip out west couldn't happen until it was nearly time to bring Hannah to BYU.  They camped in some lovely places along the way and, once in Yellowstone, discovered all the campgrounds were filled.  So they camped at Henry's Lake State Park (where Jaylyne and Craig met them and spent a day and a half with them) and drove in to Yellowstone.  Before moving Hannah in, they were able to hike up Mount Timp (but not summit) and make other traditional stops.  They arrived home just the day before everyone had to be back in school!

Kirsten has registered as a non-degree seeking graduate student, which allows her to take up to 9 credits and have them count toward her graduate degree once she applies and is accepted to grad school.  Her heartfelt interest is Medical Physics.  

Andrea and Travis and the family, except Katelyn who had to stay behind for Flag Team practices, brought Elizabeth up to BYU near the end of August.  Their summer was full, too, with Girls' Camp and a Family Reunion and Elizabeth working at Sonic and also cleaning/ grooming the park along the Rio Grande.  Andrea enlisted the aide of Elise to advise Elizabeth on grocery shopping for one.  Daniel and Crystal also met them in Provo and helped move Elizabeth in.  She had deliberately chosen a fourth floor room to give her the opportunity to stay fit, but admitted moving in and carrying everything up and down the stairs (and discovering the elevator only when they were practically finished) was challenging.  

Elizabeth and Hannah are both employed in custodial positions and work from 5 am to 8:30 am.  Early morning seminary was great preparation for this schedule.  Delightfully, they have 2 classes together.  Hannah also is in a BYU orchestra.  

Edie's 8th birthday this week brings the occasion of her baptism next weekend!

DARRYL AND MARY:

Heidi adds:  Ivie is busy with swim team, chamber orchestra, piano festival and school work. Morgan is just a BUSY body! He keeps us on our toes. Justin helped him take apart an old vacuum and then reassemble it into a smaller, portable vacuum for him to call his own. He asks me several times a day if I have anything I need "vacuumed up". Justin is finishing up the community garden that he headed up and planted in the lot next door to us. We have had 4 missionaries leave and one wedding (between our families) in the last month. Life is busy but wonderful.

Kandace writes:  We have had big changes at our house recently! Our son Johnny reported to the Provo MTC on Sept 13th. He is flying to the mission home in Edinburgh, Scotland on Oct 2nd. His mission includes Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. He is enjoying the MTC experience, but not a fan of the food. We sent only four kids back to school this fall and that was weird. Isaac (16) is a junior. He recently went on his first date to homecoming. Sabina (13) is in the 8th grade. Mallory (11) is in 6th grade, and Penny (8) is in third grade. Currently, we are enjoying a 2 week break from school for harvest and hoping to finish up the fall soccer season with good weather. John and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in August. Between that milestone and sending off a missionary, we are feeling old:)

RANDY AND JOANNE:

Laura's News -- Laura and Lyndon went hiking during the family reunion. He gave her number to a single guy in his stake. He has turned out to be "the one."  It's all but official. They are waiting for the perfect day to get engaged. 

Two of Joanne's nieces have moved in and it has been great having them here. Teri, (Tiana's niece) who has been here the last two years, has received her mission call and will be leaving in November. 

Joanne continues to improve and is feeling much better. She is about 75-80% back to normal. Thank you all so much for fasting and praying for her.

There's a journal, letters to George from family and other acquaintances, etc. It's not news about me, but maybe other family members would be interested in looking at that. 

FAMILY NEWS

JAYLYNE & CRAIG:  Hannah Celeste Reynolds was baptized March 4.  Eric Daniel Reynolds will be baptized April 8.

Jordan was sustained and set apart today as a counselor in his ward's Elders Quorum Presidency.  Richard and Courtney have been called to teach the Sunbeam Class in Primary.

Hannah and Chester are anxiously awaiting soccer season.

Ben's job has been very slow of late.  He has worked just one day a week for several weeks and it looks like this might last for a couple of months, so he is looking at options.  

Hugo just got back from taking a group of students for a ten-day 'class' in Brazil.  He was home only a couple of days and Kirsten left for a Graduate Student Seminar in Ann Arbor.  Her adviser had recommended she apply for it and helped her with the process.  She is not a graduate student yet but is headed that way. Hannah is graduating this spring and has been accepted at BYU-Provo.

Andrea's family came up during their spring break which coincided with ours.  We had a great deal of fun.  I could not say which is best:  holding grand babies, playing with the toddlers, listening to the singing, playing games or having thoughtful conversations with thoughtful teenagers.  (Elizabeth and Catherine are in the midst of writing a paper on whether the two-state solution will really solve the problem in Israel/Palestine).  Grandchildren are just wonderful.   And when two or three families all get together and they get along, it is marvelous. 

Andrea added: We just got back from a trip to Idaho where we were Able to visit Grandma Cook and Ed and with my siblings who live in the area and other "non-Cook" family members.  

Elizabeth, Catherine, Katelyn and Rebecca are running track so we have three meets a week! Travis helps coach at the middle school.  Travis was released from the Elder's quorum presidency and is now with the 11year old scouts. I am still serving in the Relief Society presidency.

Elizabeth graduates this May and has been accepted to UNM and BYU.  Catherine and Katelyn are still playing in the school orchestras and Catherine also plays in the Albuquerque Youth Concert Orchestra.  Rebecca is in her school's choir.  The younger kids are enjoying the nice weather we have been having.
Kevin and Sarah are engaged! I moved to Juneau, Alaska the first part of March - which means Aunt Karleen now has extended family living in the same stake as her!  

We have decided on May 27th for the day of wedded bliss to begin. Currently in the process of working out the rest of the details. 

Had a tire blow out on the car and had to order a whole new set - drove on a spare for a week....we are going to turn it into a storage seat later this summer. 

RANDY & JOANNE:  Matt will graduate from A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri, in Osteopathic Medicine on May 20. He will start his residency in family medicine in Tyler, Texas, in June. 

Karyna will graduate in June and has been accepted to BYU for the Fall. 

We blessed Mckenzie in Febuary and Nate and Tiana came to Utah this week, and we blessed William.  Several of Tiana's family were able to join, too. They were both wonderful family times. 

It seems like the fast for Joanne in March has helped her turn the corner (slowly). Since January 7th, she has had headaches, nausea, and stomach acid - which have led to sleepless nights, weight loss, and as you might expect a fair amount of anxiety. Doctors have found three dissected  arteries in her neck, which explains the headaches to some extent. We are fortunate there was no stroke or brain damage. Cancers and other severe issues have also been ruled out. She has started eating a little more and is sleeping better. We are full of hope and faith. We would appreciate your continued prayers. 

Nathan has moved to Reno to start a masters program at University of Nevada. He is researching the migration patterns of ducks. 

Speaking of migration, we will be empty nesters again. 

KARLEEN & KEN:  Courtney and James have bought and moved into a home in Layton.  They are enjoying the additional space—the boys love the stairs and Brycen and Camden love the two-car garage.

DANNA & DON:  The Koyles are looking forward to their next family gathering—Rachelle’s wedding in June!

ED:  No news is good news!

LYNDON & DEBBIE:  We don't have a lot of new news around here.  Lyndon is busy as usual with Church and work responsibilities, not much has changed there.  I am still serving in the primary presidency and loving it!  I spend a lot of time quilt making, embroidery and am involved with some quilting clubs.  I have made a lot of great friends in these groups and I really enjoy it!

I spent last week with my mom and had a fun time being with her.  In June Lyndon and I will be going to Girls Rough Camp.  I have been called to be the Assistant Camp Chef.  It will be a lot of work, but fun to be with all the young women and leaders for the stake.  Then two weeks after that, the last week of June we will be going on Trek with our stake youth.  We are going up to Wyoming for our Trek.

All of our kids are doing well.  Erin's daughter, Delphia and Ashley's daughter Ruby just finished performing in their school play, "Peter Pan, Jr".  It was fun to watch.  Ruby was Tinkerbell and Delphia was one of the faries in the play!  It was a good experience for both of them.  Todd's daughter, Chloe has been in many cheer competitions and they have done really well.  She loves performing!

Dallen has just finished student teaching and graduates with his masters in Elementary Education.  He is going with a group of students to Mexico the end of April for a week.  It is part of their college curriculum before graduating in May.  He will be glad to be done and hopefully start teaching this fall. 

We are all doing well.  We are so grateful for our many blessings and for the blessing of such wonderful family near and far.  Looking forward to the family reunion in June.

Ashley writes: We completed toilet training with Jaxon mid February. As it goes we had a few occasions where he got to experience doing his business outside, like on road trips and it inspired him to take his business outside our front door. Our neighbor got a dog and asked if we would want one eventually. I responded "No, there is no need when I already have a child who pees and poops outside." I am happy to report that a few time outs has broken him of his habit and he is now house trained. J Life never slows down with Jaxon and at the end of February he got his finger caught in our treadmill and sustained 3rd degree burn. We have been traveling to the burn clinic up at The U hospital every 10 days for the past month and it is healing well. We are now scheduling his appts a month out at a time now. I am grateful for good medical care.

Emma cried everytime we had to brush her hair, and after talking about solutions she decided to donate her hair to Locks of Love and is very happy having a manageable wig again.

Ruby just finished up her last night in the musical Peter Pan Jr. It has been a wonderful 4 months for her and has been a good experience. 

Jed was promoted to L2 in his company and is enjoying learning new things and working more closely with engineering. He will be working from home every Monday and will be in the weekend rotation to work one Saturday a month.

CORWIN & MARILYN:  Not much going on in Idaho Falls.  However, after serving for five years in a BYU-I Stake, Corwin was released.  Marilyn continued serving as the Stake Relief Society President.  So Corwin was attending their home Ward in Idaho Falls while Marilyn was driving to Rexburg each Sunday.  After nearly three months, a single sister in their Ward, who saw Corwin at Church each week, but had never seen Marilyn, called and invited him to her home for Sunday dinner. 

LORINDA & JAY:

News from Grants Pass, Oregon:  

·        Jay and the Jones boys will be going to Priesthood Session of General Conference this coming weekend.

·        Lorinda is now the Webelos leader in our Cub Scout Pack. 

·        Brian (Rachel's husband) recently had hip surgery and is doing well. He is scheduled to have the other hip done in a couple of weeks.

·        Iris (Lanette and Shaun's oldest) has been accepted into a French Immersion school in Provo. 

·        Samuel graduates from High School on June 7th. 

·        Adam (Karina's husband) will be doing an internship this summer... (where/what??) 

·        Other than that: no new babies, no news about sports, no news of moving or new job - but looking. 

LES & JANEY:  Les and Janey still have their property and plan to build a home with the washer and dryer on the main level.  They are doing well, although Les has muscles in his lower back that are not recovering as easily as they used to—and he’s also dealing with gout—is that hereditary?  Janey is serving in Young Women’s and with the temple being closed, the YW are able to take family names and visit area temples (there are some advantages of having the Bishop in your family!).  She has been involved in indexing for quite some time and has been serving as the Stake Indexing Director, but changes to indexing are coming.  There are five Stakes in Blackfoot—and four of them are involved in a re-alignment.

DARRYL & MARY:  Johnny is graduating from Shelley High School—he’s also participating in track.

Ivie made the Select Orchestra at Rigby High School.

I feel we would be remiss if we didn't note the recent passing of Tean Cook, Logan and Joycelyn's infant son.  We have shed tears with you and for you.  Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and your family.  We are so grateful for the knowledge of the Plan of Happiness--God lives and He is in charge.  Jesus Christ is His Firstborn and Only Begotten Son, and He suffered for our sins, but also our sorrows and infirmities--He, too, died and was resurrected, so that we may also be resurrected and be with our families throughout eternity.  Knowing that doesn't take away all sorrow, but it can certainly soften it--and bless us as we strive to become.  May each of us do the part we have accepted and agreed to do!

JAYLYNE & CRAIG:  Sarah is back in the lower 48 from Juneau, Alaska.  Craig and I had a restful Christmas break.  The weather kept us home a lot, but we did make a trip to Hurricane, UT.  Kirsten and Hugo were there visiting Hugo's parents, We got to see a video of Hugo as an overprotective father in his high school musical production of "Bye, Bye, Birdie."  Fortunately he hasn't tried to toss any of Hannah's dates out of the house for real.  I went hiking with the family up Snow Canyon.  We enjoyed our stay and then headed back up north to our deep freeze.  Craig had applied to serve as a volunteer—and has been called to serve in the Family History digitizing center they have here (in the old Irving Seminary building).  At this center, books which are owned by Family History Libraries which have expired copyrights are carefully cut apart so the pages can be digitized so they are accessible online.  He is still waiting to hear back.  They may have to wait until his current mission concludes.  I will go to Albuquerque the first full week of February for a long-anticipated week to help Andrea.

Andrea and Travis added a son in early January--Michael Alexander Thomas.  They enjoyed a visit from Elise at Christmas. Had a quiet Thanksgiving and New Year. The kids have enjoyed listening to Travis read Little Britches by Ralph Moody

RANDY & JOANNE:  It was an eventful end of 2016 and beginning of 2017 with the addition of two grandchildren.  Matt and Lindsay had a daughter (Mckenzie Jane) and Nate and Tiana had a son (William Alexander).  Matt is in his fourth year of Med school and has been interviewing for his residency. He and Lindsay will find out in March where they will be going.  Nate and Tiana have moved to Sparks, NV   He is going to attend Nevada -Reno to get his Masters. 

Randy is back in Australia. Joanne will be joining him in the next few weeks. 

 

KARLEEN & KEN:  We love the holiday season!  We changed our long-held tradition of tromping through the woods hunting for the perfect tree—and bought a fake one.  It was fine, the cleanup was much faster and easier, and we dealt with the lack of evergreen fragrance by buying a wreath!  Karleen has soffits and new siding on her house!!! (Ken does, too!).  We love it--it has been a project of blood, sweat, and tears--and finally we had a contractor finish it up for us!  Now we just have to clean up the yard and deck from the work--but spring will be here soon!

Courtney and James are purchasing their first home—and we are heading down to help them move and spend a few days with Mom. 

DANNA & DON:  The only thing we have to report is that Jordan promoted to Lieutenant (O3) the beginning of January. We had his promotion ceremony on the 9th. We are still really enjoying our time here. We have been here in Japan for 2 years the end of Feb. and have 1 more year on this set of orders. Its gone by really fast 

ED:

LYNDON & DEBBIE:  Jed was called into the Bishopric at the end of October. Ruby was cast as Tinkerbell in the school play and is loving practice, she has also become our babysitter on Friday nights after we get the 3 boys in bed and enjoys making money and made her first big purchase of a Fitbit, and we have thoroughly enjoyed getting out on a regular basis for the first time in 12 years. 

The kids have liked taking turns going with Jed to BYU football games this fall. Ruby Emma and Eli are happy in school and Jaxon keeps wondering when the bus will be coming for him.   The best news of course is that Henry Dunsmore Romig was born on December 30th. He weighed 8 lb 2 oz and was 21 inches. He already has a few nicknames: The Hen, Henry the VI, and occasionally Henny. Jed had been home for three weeks with us (thank you paternity leave!) and it will be a rough transition back to real life on Monday!  I am feeling very grateful for our 6 children and the growth and stretching that comes with it.

CORWIN & MARILYN:

LORINDA & JAY:  All is well with the Jones bunch. We appreciate all who traveled to support Karina and Adam for her temple endowment/open house. Their wedding ceremony was lovely! Unfortunately - she was ill a week before her wedding, the wedding day, and a week following. Several members of our family also became ill.  News:  Jacob quit school at USU. He has 6 more months of flooring experience before he can apply for his own license to start up his own business. He replaced our bathroom floors while here for Christmas - and he did a great job! Jeremy has plans to do job training in Dallas, TX, for a spring/summer sales job. He announces that he has no wife, no kids and no plans to pursue such things in the near future. Lorinda was released as Primary President and is enjoying the break - though the anticipation of what's next is excruciating. Sam is counting the days until graduation. He was enjoying our 4 "no school snow days" the first week of the year until I told him if there were too many - they'd have to add extra days of school at the end of the year and push out that graduation date. That has put a stop to the nightly prayers for snow from this house.  Lanette and Shaun have moved to a new home in Provo—closer to work for Shaun.

DARRYL & MARY:  John started a new job in October for an INL site company. He is a member of a team that assesses mainly utility companies for cyber-security vulnerabilities. He has enjoyed it so far, even with the travel involved. Recently, he was called to serve in the Elder's quorum presidency in our ward. Kandace has just finished her first year as the 2nd Counselor in our Stake Primary Presidency, and she is finally starting to feel comfortable in that position. She is looking forward to another year at girl's camp as an assistant director, and to her "genealogy vacation" to Rootstech in SLC in early February. John IV (17) is finishing his senior year, apply for colleges, and looking towards a mission. He is currently teaching primary. Isaac (16) is a sophomore and working on getting a driver's license. Sabina (12) is enjoying the Young Women's program and playing the violin and piano. Mallory (10) and Penny (7) are learning the piano as well.

We enjoyed a fun family vacation visiting Grandma and Grandpa Keenan in Florida for Thanksgiving. They live a little over an hour from Disney World, so we spent 4 days at Disney. For Christmas, we bought a new puppy. The whole family is helping train her (Ginger Snap Rogers), and we enjoy her most of the time. 

COOK COUSINS (AND FRIENDS!):

Connie and Clair Hixson (doctors who did residency in North Carolina with Darryl, who also knew Mary, Randy and Joanne) – send their love to the Cook Family. Their children are grown:  Hilary, Brooke and Nathan are married, and their youngest daughter Kirsten got engaged early in December.  Claire retired, but is focusing on medical missionary work. He is also an avid photographer and you can see his work at: journeyswithlight.blogspot.com. Connie is an Associate Professor at ETSU Family Physicians and continues with patient care.
